Which lubricant should I choose?

Hvilken glidecreme skal jeg vælge?

Lube, lubricant, lubricant. Call it what you want - as soon as you've made the acquaintance of the little helper on the tube, you're hooked. Sex can be felt in many ways, and it feels extra good with a little extra lubrication.

But which lubricant should you choose? There are several different ones, and they each have their own hidden talent. Don't worry. We guide you:

What is lubricant?

Lube is lubrication you can use when you have sex. It makes penetration slide much easier - whether you're having anal sex or it's your or your partner's vagina that needs a little extra moisture. When you caress the clitoris, it can also feel nice if you have lubricant on your fingers.

Lubricant is made for just that purpose: To make a penis or a toy slide in and out or to make a vibrator or a finger slide deliciously over your or your partner's clit.

Lubricant can be made of several different ingredients and is either water-based, silicone-based or oil-based. You can get flavored lube, lube that gives greater sensitivity and organic lube. To name just a few variants.

Lubricant is specially developed for sex and to take care of your body, and therefore we also do not recommend that you use anything else. When using sex toys, remember to only use the water-based version. The same rule applies if you use a condom. The oil-based version can dissolve latex condoms. And its silicone-based friend can destroy your vibrator, dildo and all the other fun equipment and gear you have lying next to the bed.

Why use lubricant?

Lube is a help if you don't get wet when you want to have sex. It is absolutely essential when you have anal sex - because your anus does not produce its own lubrication, just like the vagina does. Lube also makes using sex toys much more comfortable.

And then it can also make sex in general feel velvety soft and super nice. Lubricant is always a good idea - at least to have as a backup in the bedside drawer. You don't have to use it. Maybe you would like to use it once in a while. And maybe it will become your go-to-best-sex-buddy every time you have to have sex, both with yourself and others.

Which lubricant should I choose?

It depends on what you are going to use it for. A good idea is to have both a cream based on water and a cream based on silicone lying on the bedside table. Then you are sure to have one both for self pleasure and playing with fun equipment and for good old-fashioned sex in a missionary position. We have created an overview that makes it easy for you to choose the right lubricant:

Advantages and disadvantages of water-based lubricants

  • Can be used with sex toys.
  • Can be used at the same time as a condom.
  • Is easy to wash off.
  • Ideal if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Has a light and liquid consistency.
  • The sliding ability disappears faster than with e.g. a water-based lubricant and therefore you may need to apply it several times during sex.
  • Can start to "flutter" after a while.

Advantages and disadvantages of silicone-based lubricant

  • Has a soft texture that makes sex feel even better.
  • Has better sliding properties than water-based lubricants.
  • The sliding effect lasts a long time.
  • Ideal for sex without toys.
  • Good for anal sex.
  • Can be used with glass or steel toys.
  • Can be used with latex condoms.
  • Should not be used with toys made of silicone.

Advantages and disadvantages of oil-based lubricants

  • Can also be used for massage.
  • Is good to use for sex toys in size XXL and fisting.
  • Can be difficult to wash away.
  • Do not use with latex condoms.
  • Do not use with toys made of PVC materials.

What can be used as a lubricant?

You can certainly think of many fun things that can be used as lubricant. Especially from the kitchen cupboard: Coconut oil, olive oil… butter? Or perhaps from the bathroom shelf: Hand cream and Vaseline? We cannot recommend any of it.

Use only lubricants made for the purpose. It is precisely developed so that you can have sex in a safe and fun way. Cooking oil can cause infections if you are unlucky because it is difficult to wash away and can be a breeding ground for bacteria. And creams that are meant to be applied to the outside of the body have a different pH value than the vagina and may be laced with perfume.
