You and your partner are thoroughly warmed up - but oh no! You've run out of lube!
You search desperately in cupboards and drawers for lubrication you can use. But what can you use instead of lubricant? And is there a recipe for homemade lubricant?
What is the best lubricant?
The very short answer is: A real lubricant is the best lubricant.
It's always cool to experiment with sex and masturbation and try different things. But just when it comes to the lubrication that makes anal sex , sex toys and sex with penetration slip, you'd better not experiment. Instead, stick to products that are meant for the purpose.
Using alternatives to lube can be an expensive and stinging affair. You risk destroying your sex toy, dissolving the latex in the condom and getting an infection in the abdomen.
It is a good idea to always have a lubricant lying around in the drawer and in the bag, so that you are never without one. Learn more in our guide which lubricant should I choose . If the need for an alternative lube does arise, here are a few good tips.
Alternatives to lubricants
If you use condoms or lozenges, you should always use a water-based lubricant instead of an oil-based one. Oil-based liquids can dissolve the latex that is in a condom. But if for one reason or another you and your partner don't use condoms or lozenges, there are two alternatives to lube you can use.
However, it should not be a permanent solution, as here too there is a risk of infections and disruption of the bacterial flora in the abdomen:
1. Almond oil as a lubricant
Almond oil is a delicious soft oil, which is also often used for body massage and body care. On rare occasions, you and your partner can use almond oil as a lubricant if you do not have a better alternative at hand.
2. Coconut oil as a lubricant
If you don't have almond oil nearby, you can use coconut oil as a lubricant. However, the coconut oil is antibacterial and will be able to mess up the PH value in the vagina.
The oil can be both hard and soft, depending on the temperature. If it is hard, you can break off a piece and warm it up between your hands first.
4 things you must never use as lubricant
Whether you have lots of anal sex experience and don't think you need the best lube, or whether you're going to have sex with sex toys or vulva penetration, there are some alternatives to lube that you should absolutely stay away from:
1. Cream and soap as lubricant
They sting and mess with the PH value in the vagina - so you must stay away from them completely. Even if you always have it on the shelf, shampoo does not work as a lubricant. There is a huge risk of irritations, allergies, etc., as they often contain perfumes and substances that should not come near your mucous membranes. So cream and soap like lubricant are a no-go.
2. Vaseline as a lubricant
Vaseline as a lubricant is also a big no-go. Although it is known by many as a solid sidekick to anal sex, it is not a good idea. Vaseline contains petroleum, which not only breaks down the latex in condoms, but it can also cause some rather unpleasant infections.
3. Baby oil as a lubricant
It may well be good enough for the softest baby bum. But it is not good enough for your butt. Or vulva. Like Vaseline, it also contains petroleum, and therefore baby oil does not work as a substitute for lubricant either.
4. Cooking oil as a lubricant
Although the cooking oils in your kitchen cupboard are both organic and without additives, they are not a good alternative to lubricant either. Although it might be tempting to make your own homemade lubricant with delicious oils, they destroy and dissolve condoms. In addition to infection and irritation in the abdomen, olive oil, canola oil and corn oil will make you and your sex partners smell a bit like the local barbecue bar.
